How to beat Venusaur

  • Use both of Venusaur’s types when choosing an attack. Bug and Poison moves deal neutral damage because one type’s weakness is canceled by the other type’s resistance.
  • Ground moves are also neutral: Poison’s Ground weakness is canceled by Grass’s Ground resistance. Earthquake is not a super-effective shortcut here.
  • A Pokémon carrying a Psychic or Ice attack can exploit Venusaur’s weaknesses without sharing that move’s type. Check its defensive matchup as well as its attack.

Abilities can change the matchup

Overgrow boosts Grass attacks at low HP. Modern Venusaur can instead have Chlorophyll, which doubles its Speed in sun. Mega Venusaur has Thick Fat and different effective matchups; this guide covers ordinary Venusaur.

How to handle Venusaur in Daily Red

Daily Red uses Generation III battle rules. The weaknesses above still apply to this standard form, but Fairy-type matchups do not exist in Gen III.

  • Red’s Venusaur uses Giga Drain, Sludge Bomb, Sleep Powder, and Leech Seed. Try to keep offensive pressure on it before sleep and draining effects prolong the fight.
  • Grass types are immune to Leech Seed, but Gen III does not give them immunity to Sleep Powder. Do not treat a Grass-type switch as protection from both moves.
  • Flying attacks are physical in Gen III; Fire, Ice, and Psychic attacks are special. The Fairy resistance above applies to modern games, since Daily Red has no Fairy type.
