How to beat Espeon

  • A Dark-type Pokémon is immune to Psychic attacks, making it a useful defensive option. Check its second type and the opponent’s other moves before switching.
  • Espeon’s base Defense is lower than its Special Defense. A strong physical attack can be useful, but its power and your attacker’s stats still matter.
  • A Ghost-type move can hit Espeon super effectively even when the Pokémon using it is not a Ghost type.

Abilities can change the matchup

Synchronize can pass a burn, poison, or paralysis back to the Pokémon that caused it. Modern Espeon can also have Magic Bounce, which reflects many status moves; direct damaging attacks avoid that particular problem.

How to handle Espeon in Daily Red

Daily Red uses Generation III battle rules. The weaknesses above still apply to this standard form, but Fairy-type matchups do not exist in Gen III.

  • Red’s Espeon uses Psychic, Shadow Ball, Calm Mind, and Morning Sun. Leaving it uncontested can let it boost its special stats or recover HP.
  • Bug and Ghost attacks are physical in Gen III; Dark attacks are special. Shadow Ball therefore uses Attack in Daily Red, even though it is special in modern games.
  • Physical pressure can attack Espeon’s lower Defense without being weakened by Calm Mind’s Special Defense boost. Red’s Espeon has Synchronize, so plan status moves accordingly.
